District Correspondent, Baruipur: Chaos erupted at West Bengal’s Bhangor soon after the voting for the Panchayat polls began on Monday morning.
The followers of TMC strongman Arabul Islam has been accused of capturing two booths of South Gajipur. The voting was stalled as a result at booth number 100 and 102. Gunshots were reportedly heard.
The members of the Jami Rakkha Committee (Save Land Committee) started protesting against the capturing of the booth. They accused the TMC goons of kidnapping their independent candidate Shariful.
This resulted in a clash between the two groups. Two journalists of renowned media channels were also injured in the incident. A huge contingent of police was rushed to the spot.
The district police and Kolkata police under the leadership of DG Rupesh Kumar resorted to lathi-charge to bring the situation under control. Apart from them were present, Kolkata Police DC South, Baruipur police district super Arijit Sinha.
According to reports received, the voting process has resumed.
On May 12, Trinamool Congress strongman Arabul Islam, was arrested in connection with the killing of an independent candidate’s supporter. Despite the absence of Arabul, violence still mars Bhangor during the crucial Panchayat polls.
