Panchayat Poll Begins, Violence Reported In Several Districts


Desk: The much awaited West Bengal Panchayat polls began at 7 am on Monday. The updates are given below:

South 24 Pargana

At present the voting has been stopped at South Gajipur. Violence has been reported, gunshots have been heard. 1 person has been detained. On the other hand, booth number 100 and 102 has been allegedly taken over by TMC goons. They have been accused of forcefully taking away the independent candidate Shariful.

North 24 Pargana

The ruling party has been accused of beating BJP candidate Prabir Mandal at 182 booth of Duttapukur Gram Panchayat.

Chaos erupted at Aamdona under the Bagda police station. Bombs were hurled as per the villagers. The villagers caught 9 of the accused and beat them up. 7 of them are injured.

At Howrah’s Routara area, the independent candidates were attacked. The injured have been shifted to the Habra Hospital. The independents also beat up and injured two TMC supporters, who have been admitted to the Habra hospital.

Cooch behar

The independent candidate of Cooch Behar’s Sutkabari has been accused of hurling bombs and firing at the TMC candidate and the voters. At least 20 have been injured.


Bombings reported from Bagnan’s Haturiya. A CPM agent Sayera Khatoon has been injured in the incident.

War of words broke out between TMC and BJP at Udang High School. BJP female candidate Chanda Mayur was thrown out of the booth.

Voters stopped from voting at Uluberia block number 2. The voters in turn blocked the national highway. In booth number 181, clashes broke out between BJP and TMC goons. 4 BJP workers injured.


Six TMC workers injured in Murshidabad with Congress workers accused of attacking the ruling party outside the booth at Ragenagar. Injured admitted to Beldanga Gramin Hospital.

The voting will continue till 5 p.m. in 621 zilla parishads, 6157 panchayat samitis, and 31,827 gram panchayats. The counting will take place on May 17.

Considering the history of violence in the state panchayat polls, elaborate security arrangements have been made to maintain law and order during the polling.

Around 46000 personnel of West Bengal Police, 12000 of Kolkata Police were getting support from around 1500 security personnel from other states.
