Desk: On Wednesday, the Indian Navy launched ‘Karanj’, the third Scorpene class submarine. The shipbuilding company Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) constructed the submarine and was launched by the Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba’s wife Reena Lanba.
Reportedly, in collaboration with French shipbuilding major Naval Group, Karanj is one of the 6 submarines being built at the dock.
The Navy chief said, “It (submarine) will undergo rigorous tests for the next one year before it is commissioned.”

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned the first of the 6 Scorpene-class submarines into the Indian Navy. He stated that it is a big step towards India’s defence system. Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that submarine building is a sophisticated and exacting craft and only few countries possess in their industrial capacity.
